Sidenotes

Nippen Tuck's name (although he typically goes by Tuck, or just Nip) comes from a small former town in Illinois which was named 'Nippentuck'. I believe the spelling is correct. When I was a kid we visited this town one or two times, usually through accident or simply because it was along the route and we wanted to go. There was nothing left but an old water well pump, which meant there wasn't much to see. But I held an odd fascination with it all the same. Local legend goes that the town, or what's left of it at least, is haunted. I never could get any specifics and have not been able to find any through the internet, but it seems to be a well-known local fact that this is true.

There seem to be very few records of Nippentuck, at least on the internet, and the only mentions I have found are in records concerning Pike County, although Nippentuck, from my experience, lies in Douglas County. The only two references to the town are mentioned at the Pike County Illinois 'GenWeb' site and at a RootsWeb listing. It is also not present on the 1895 map of Douglas County nor in the 1895 town names, although it was quite possible the town did not exist until the 1900s as the well that remains is, so far as I can tell, relatively modern. I am however not a well pump expert. I am unsure, really, of where exactly the 'town' is today, as I have not visited on purpose since I was a kid.

A recent news story about a black bear corpse showing up in Illinois was mentioned by my father, who heard my home town's restaurant during farmer-coffee-hour that it was near Nippentuck. The article states that it was found at Hugo, Illinois, which is at least in Douglas County.

Choosing Nippen Tuck as a name drew on the general interest I had (and the character shared) with stories of the strange, otherworldly, and even macabre and morbid, and a fascination with the decay that modern and even ancient ruins and artifacts represent. The keen interest in death, whether it be of a person or society or community, building or object, and even ideas and identities is what drives him, and perhaps is a practical replacement for his parents themselves. Nippen Tuck, thus, seemed a suitable name.
